Ever tried to pack the ancient city of Matera into a 24-hour whirlwind with two kids in tow? Well, we did, and it was nothing short of legendary. Here’s how our family of four managed to squeeze in all the highlights, with a few surprises along the way.
Home Sweet Cave: Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort
Our Matera escapade began at Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort, where we checked into the La Gran Palazziata Panoramica. Don’t let the fancy name fool you—this room was as spacious as a cave (literally) and cozy enough to make even our 5-year-old feel like a royal. It fit all four of us comfortably, with just enough room for the kids to bounce off the walls while we took in the breathtaking view.
Vroom, Vroom! The Ape Tour
As soon as we dumped our bags, we hopped into an Ape buggy for a tour of Matera. Imagine a rollercoaster ride through history, minus the screaming (okay, there was a little screaming). The Ape zoomed us through the Sassi districts, showing us everything from ancient cave dwellings to panoramic views that made us wonder why we only booked one night here.
Gelato and Spritz: The Perfect Combo
After our tour, it was time to reward the kids (and ourselves). We made a beeline to Laboratorio di Gelateria Antigianale, where the kids dove headfirst into gelato heaven. Meanwhile, we had our own treat in mind—an Aperol Spritz with a side of stunning views at Terrazzo Cavaliere. With the kids occupied with their cones, we savored our drinks and soaked in the moment. Parenting win? We think so.
Strolling Through History
With bellies full of gelato and Aperol, we decided to explore Matera on foot. The kids were surprisingly enthusiastic, probably because every corner of this city feels like it’s hiding a secret. We wandered through winding alleys, stumbled upon ancient churches, and may or may not have bribed the kids with promises of more gelato if they kept walking.
Dinner and a Light Show
After freshening up back at our cave-turned-luxury suite, we headed out for dinner at Al Casale. The food was divine, the ambiance was perfect, and just as we were about to call it a night, Mother Nature decided to put on a show. Cue an epic lightning storm, turning our walk back to the hotel into a dramatic dash through the rain. The kids thought it was the coolest thing ever. Us? Let’s just say we’ll never forget that sprint.
Breakfast and a Final Farewell
The next morning, we woke up to a fabulous breakfast at the hotel—think pastries, fresh fruit, and enough coffee to recover from last night’s storm. We couldn’t leave Matera without one last stop, so we made our way to The Church of Santa Maria De Idris. The kids marveled at the ancient architecture while we took a moment to soak it all in.
And just like that, our Matera adventure came to an end. We packed up, waved goodbye to our cave for the night, and headed off to our next destination, with memories of gelato, Aperol Spritz, and an unexpected light show dancing in our heads.
Matera, you were short and sweet—but oh, what a night!
