Ah, Rome! The Eternal City, where history and gelato blend seamlessly on every corner. You’re ready for the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the pizza (oh, the pizza!). But there’s one crucial question left unanswered: What shoes do you wear to roam Rome without resembling a blistered zombie? Worry not, dear traveler, for Little Luxe Family Travel has got your feet covered!

Gladiator Sandals: For the Bold and the Blistered

Channel your inner Russell Crowe with gladiator sandals! Perfect for those Instagram-worthy moments, but let’s be real: unless you’re used to strapping your feet into a leather entrapment device, you’ll soon be walking like you’ve wrestled a lion.

Instead, try a comfortable sandal. This one was kept me going all through my 3 week trip to Italy last summer. (No one tell my husband I came home and bought them in every color!)

MY PICK:

Sneakers: Your New Best Friend

Sneakers are the trusty sidekick of any Roman adventure. They’re comfortable, versatile, and can handle anything from cobblestone streets to surprise fountains (because Rome has a thing for those). Plus, your kids can sprint after pigeons with ease.

I went with the On The Roger Advantage Tennis Sneaker, added bonus, after Rome they became my tennis shoes! Cute, comfortable, and with a splash of pink, they were comfortable and stylish to wear with shorts, dresses and everything in between!

MY PICK:

Flip-Flops: A Cautionary Tale

Flip-flops are great for the beach, not so much for ancient ruins. Imagine trying to look dignified while chasing one through the Colosseum after it flies off mid-step. It’s a scene straight out of a Roman comedy. Plus, Italians only wear flip flops to the beach and you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb! If you want to bring a “water” shoe, opt for the Reef Water Vista Slingback Sandal. You can dress it up and down. Bonus if you are visiting a beach town, these shoes will come in handy with rocky shores!

MY PICK:

Heels: Not Today, Fashionista

Heels in Rome? Darling, no. The cobblestones will eat them alive and laugh while doing it. Sure, you might feel like a Roman goddess strutting through the piazza, but five minutes in, you'll be cursing the ancient architects and begging for a foot massage.

MY PICK: Leave all heels at home

Pro Tips for Perfectly Pleased Feet

  1. Break Them In: Whatever shoes you choose, wear them before your trip. Trust us, breaking in shoes in Rome’s historic center is not the time for discovery.

  2. Pack Band-Aids: Blisters happen. Be prepared to avoid a Roman tragedy.

  3. Rotate Shoes: Different shoes for different days can save your feet from repetitive strain.

  4. Insider Hack: Gelato stops double as foot rests. Make every lick count.

In conclusion, when in Rome, walk as the Romans do: comfortably and stylishly. Whether you choose the gladiator’s path or the sneaker’s journey, make sure your feet are as happy as your heart when you toss that coin into the Trevi Fountain. Because at the end of the day, happy feet make for happy travels. Bon voyage!
