Bernina Express- Swiss Train Ride

Some train rides get you from point A to point B.

The Bernina Express? It turns the journey into the main event.

Widely considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world, the Bernina Express is more than transportation — it’s an alpine adventure with front-row seats to some of the most jaw-dropping views in Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage route runs from Tirano, Italy to St. Moritz, Switzerland, climbing to 7,391 feet (2,253 meters) at Ospizio Bernina, the highest point on the line. Translation: this is not your average commuter train.

Think soaring mountains, sparkling alpine lakes, glaciers, storybook villages, and the kind of scenery that makes you stop mid-snack and say, “Wait, look out the window!”

Why the Bernina Express Is So Special

Crossing the spectacular Bernina Pass, the train’s giant panoramic windows make you feel like you’re riding through a postcard. Every turn seems to reveal another unbelievable view of the Swiss Alps. And on routes that continue beyond St. Moritz to Chur, passengers also get to experience the famous Landwasser Viaduct, one of Switzerland’s most iconic railway crossings.

Basically, if Switzerland and Italy wanted to show off, this would be how they’d do it.

The Best Time to Ride the Bernina Express

Both summer and winter are incredible times to experience the Bernina Express — it just depends on what kind of magic you’re after.

In summer, the route is filled with lush green meadows, bright blue skies, and sparkling lakes. In winter, everything transforms into a snowy wonderland that feels straight out of a snow globe.

We traveled in late winter (March) and were lucky enough to see actual snow high in the mountains — and even a full whiteout at one point. It was equal parts magical and mildly dramatic, which honestly made it even more memorable.

Our Family’s Bernina Express Adventure

Our family of four started our Switzerland adventure in Zurich and Lucerne before making our way by train to Chur, our starting point in Switzerland for the Bernina Express.

Chur was such a cute Swiss town and the perfect place to slow down before the big adventure. We wandered the charming streets, soaked up the cozy atmosphere, and had an amazing Swiss fondue dinner that fully delivered on the cheesy alpine dream.

Before boarding the train the next morning, we stayed overnight at Hotel ABC, and I can honestly say it was the perfect choice for families. It was directly across the street from the train station, which made everything so easy — especially when traveling with kids and luggage. The breakfast was delicious, the hotel was very comfortable, and most importantly, they were able to accommodate our family of four in one room, which is always a huge win.

Convenience level: eliteYY

First Class vs. Second Class on the Bernina Express

For this trip, we weren’t able to secure first class tickets, and I’m not going to lie — I was a little distraught about it for a while.

But after actually taking the ride? I can confidently say it did not make a difference.

Our seats were great, the views were spectacular, and I truly wouldn’t have changed a thing. If you’re stressing because first class is sold out, let this be your sign to relax. Second class was still an absolutely amazing experience. The beauty outside the window does not care what class your ticket says.

What It’s Like On Board the Bernina Express

One thing we really appreciated was that at every stop, there was a recording explaining what we were seeing and where we were along the route. It made the experience even more engaging and helped us appreciate just how special the journey was.

And for the kids? The mini trains full of chocolate were an instant hit. Honestly, Switzerland knows exactly what it’s doing.

We ordered some cheese and wine, settled in, and let the Bernina Express carry us from Switzerland into Italy while we watched the landscape completely transform around us. It was relaxing, exciting, beautiful, and somehow still felt surreal the entire time.

As we climbed higher into the mountains, we saw snow and then found ourselves in a total whiteout — one of those travel moments that makes everyone stop talking and just stare.

It was truly a magical experience and absolutely worth all the hype.

Final Thoughts: Is the Bernina Express Worth It?

Without question: yes.

The Bernina Express is one of those rare travel experiences that feels just as special as everyone says it is. It’s scenic, relaxing, family-friendly, and unforgettable — the kind of journey that becomes a core memory for both kids and adults.

And if Lake Como or Milan are on your bucket list, you catch a ride from either location.
